In 1997, Roberto Luka founded Finca Sophenia with Gustavo Benvenuto, The winery, which is located at the slopes of The Andes Mountains in Tupungato, in Mendoza gets its name from blending Sofia and Eugenia, the owner’s daughters. Winemakers Rogelio Rabino, and Matías Michelini and consultant Michel Rolland form the winemaking team.
At an elevation of 4,000 ft, with a cool climate, the terroir benefits from an abundant sun, therefore creating a sharp contrast between day and night temperatures. The 321 acres of vineyards are planted on well-draining rocky and sandy soils. The fruit is estate grown and hand-picked. White grapes are cooled and gently crushed. Sometimes some skin maceration is performed for a short period. Red grapes are crushed and placed by gravity in stainless steel tanks where they are cooled for a pre-maceration. After fermentation, the finished wine stays in contact with the skins for additional complexity. All wines from Finca Sophenia are vinified with selected yeasts and aged in French or/and American oak barrels.
