When Bruno Lafon bought this old estate in the village of Magalas with his sister-in-law, Sylvie Legros, the property was a collection of run down vineyards planted with a wide variety of grapes. Lafon has transformed the vineyards, bringing his experience as an established grower in Burgundy, and now cultivates 13 varieties of vines that are best matched to the local conditions (and traditions).
In the glass, this seamless blend of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne has a full, saturated green-gold color, and a fascinating nose, which at first is hard to pin down with explicit descriptors. At one moment, pineapple, lime blossom, green apples, and chamomile move in and out of the background. At the next, the nose evolves into a complex amalgam that includes pithy citrus and honeydew, with fleeting suggestions of wild fennel and spearmint. On the palate, the wine is silky and luxurious, with layered flavors that include ripe pineapple core, lime zest, and crystallized honey. The finish is punctuated with a delicately palpable sensation of dusty, crushed-rocks minerality.
