Herrigoia Rioja Alavesa
Brand Bodegas Companon Arrieta
This wine is highly unusual for a wine from Rioja in that it is made using the process known as carbonic maceration, in which whole bunches of grapes are fermented in a sealed vessel that has first been filled with carbon dioxide (a process strongly associated with the Beaujolais region); the result is a highly aromatic red with fresh fruit on the palate, good acidity, and great persistence on the finish.
This wine is produced by Bodegas Companon Arrieta, a small family winery in Lanciego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The estate comprises 10 acres spread across 17 different tiny parcels, bush-pruned vines averaging fifty years of age and under organic certification. The vineyards have been in the family for three generations, but it wasn’t until 1982 that they built the bodega and started making wine, initially selling it off to bigger companies but, starting in 2010, bottling the wine themselves under the Herrigoia label.
