San Filippo Le Lucere 2008 Brunello Di Montalcino
Brand San Filippo
This is one of the wines of the vintage, not just for its sheer confidence and personality, but moreover for the elegant nuances it offers. As the wine evolves in the glass, it slowly imparts dark cherry, campfire, smoke, licorice, root beer and balsam herb.
Founded in 1972 and currently owned by Roberto Gianelli, San Filippo sits in north Montalcino near Biondi-Santi's Il Greppo, one of the prime locations in the region. San Filippo typically makes a dense yet elegant Brunello that offers early approachability, but it definitely has the stuffing for the cellar. Replete with Montalcino terroir, this 08 is deeply aromatic, proffering lots of wildflowers and frutti di bosco on the nose, while its velvety and persistent palate adds earth and spice to the mix. San Filippo produced just 2,500 cases of this wine in 2008, a vintage rated excellent by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, and IWM's allocation is tantalizingly small.
